MARBLE
MARBLE, FAMOUSLY DURABLE, AND SANDSTONE, SUSCEPTIBLE TO EROSION, ARE TWO STONES FROM WHICH THE WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL FORMS HAVE BEEN CARVED.
Using a Leica BLK360, we laser scanned sandstone formations at Buckskin Gulch, along the border of Arizona and Utah. We took a circular section of the data and made a 3D model. The crew at Garfagnana Innovazione programmed their 7-axis robot to carve our file from marble as part of the Digital Stone Project Residency in Gramolazzo, Italy. Then Caralie travelled to Gramolazzo, living for a month there among artists, architects, and designers, while hand-finishing the robot-carved sculpture.
